it makes sense tomato sauce was sold as a medicine. toms are high in antioxidants which assist the production of white blood cells - hence help to boost immunity after illness. plus in the 1830s there was no oil-based synthetic farming and therefore tomato sauces (or ketchup) would have been on the whole better for peeps then than now - full of sugar!
