PJ carved them. They sit on metal spikes which he concreted into the ground so they don't roll off the hill and so they don't sit right on the earth and rot. I think they look like giant seed pods.

Fantastic! I actually thought they were stone. Now on closer inspection
I see the cracks and the marks from the carving.
